California Wildfires: Trump Says State Needs Water, Fewer Trees

CALIFORNIA — The wildfires burning across California that have so far killed nine people and destroyed more than 1,500 homes is caused by two factors, according to President Donald Trump. The president on Sunday chimed in on Twitter about how the state can decrease the amount of destructive brush fires.

“California wildfires are being magnified & made so much worse by the bad environmental laws which aren’t allowing massive amount of readily available water to be properly utilized,” Trump wrote. “It is being diverted into the Pacific Ocean. Must also tree clear to stop fire spreading!”

On Monday, Trump tweeted again about the wildfires.

“Governor Jerry Brown must allow the Free Flow of the vast amounts of water coming from the North and foolishly being diverted into the Pacific Ocean,” the president wrote. “Can be used for fires, farming and everything else. Think of California with plenty of Water – Nice! Fast Federal govt. approvals.”

A Cal Fire official told a BuzzFeed reporter, “We have the ability to pull water from wherever we need using aircrafts-no idea where he’s getting his information” in response to Trump’s tweet.

Trump’s remarks come after the administration approved a Presidential Major Disaster Declaration for Shasta County where the Carr Fire has burned 163,000 acres and killed seven people. The declaration allows victims of the wildfire to receive federal assistance, including housing, food and unemployment aid, according to Gov. Jerry Brown’s office.

More than a dozen wildfires were burning in California as of Monday morning with the largest being the Mendocino Complex Fire at 273,000 acres. It is the second largest wildfire in state history.

Two other people, both firefighters, were killed while battling the Ferguson Fire in Mariposa County. That fire burned 91,ooo acres and was 38 percent contained by Monday morning.
